Main focus

; – Skills for the interpretation of terminology on programming, imprinting, critical windows, the first 1,000 days of life, reprogramming. – Knowledge of the different physiological, molecular and genetic mechanisms involved in early health and disease programming. – Basic knowledge on how to assess the risk to maternal, child and youth health from environmental factors. – Knowledge of the effects of gene-diet interactions on early development, and the concepts of molecular nutrition, nutrigenomics, nutrigenetics and nutriepigenetics. They will be able to convey the impact of nutrition and gender on gene expression and phenotype. – Knowledge of predictive models based on genetics, diet and lifestyle. They will be able to convey general concepts of precision nutrition based on these models.; – Skills for the identification of maternal metabolic conditions of risk during pregnancy and lactation. They will gain knowledge of socioeconomic, cultural, environmental and lifestyle factors that influence growth and development in pregnant women and their children. – Knowledge of the structure and role of the placenta. They will be able to assess intrauterine growth based on ultrasound measurements and the use of fetal growth curves. – Skills to convey the importance of health intervention during a woman’s reproductive age. They will acquire knowledge about nutritional recommendations during pregnancy and lactation for the prevention of the most frequent complications. – Knowledge about the modulating factors of gene expression, epigenetic and phenotype changes and how they are related to different pathologies. They will be able to interpret the new analysis methodologies in epidemiology, bioinformatics and artificial intelligence (machine learning). They will also be able to design disease prevention strategies through reprogramming, and design personalised therapies. – Skills to use nutrition at each stage of development from a multidisciplinary approach. They will learn how to apply nutrition in clinical settings, in research, in preventive strategies and in nutrition education for parents and children. They will also learn about the most up-to-date nutritional recommendations for each age and pathological situation during childhood and adolescence.; – Skills to communicate the concept of early health programming and immune system development.; – Skills for the transfer of knowledge of the nutritional and immunomodulatory factors of breast milk. They will be able to identify differences in the composition of infant and follow-on formulas and will be able to assess the potential effect of their ingredients on children’s health.; – They will also learn about the role of complementary feeding in early health programming.; – Knowledge of the establishment, development and specialisation of the microbiota in the various bodily tissues [amniotic liquid, placenta, genitals (vagina), breast milk, skin, conjunctiva, lung tissue, oral mucosa, digestive tract] from the beginning of life and its role in the health of children and adolescents. They will be able to identify the factors that influence structural development and its functionality (breastfeeding vs. dietary formula, feeding patterns, eating behaviour, nutritional culture, physical activity/sedentarism, hygiene, quality of sleep, etc.).
