Main focus
; Graduates of this master’s programme will have an in-depth knowledge of the current state and evolution of the most relevant aspects of the history and culture, society, schools of thought, economy, politics and judicial system of East Asia. More specifically, they will have a solid understanding of and know how to critically analyse the problems of Asian culture with a focus on their relation to the reality of today’s world. Graduates will be able to analyse social changes, the role of women, countercultural forms, and antinuclear movements in East Asia. Moreover, they will be capable of contextualising the instrumental and sectorial actions of economic policy. They will also be able to identify the most recent historiographic tendencies and/or artistic developments from an intercultural perspective. Finally, graduates will understand and be able to analyse the changes in East Asian societies that have an impact on the environment.
Competences
Students that have completed the second cycle have the following competencies: – Have demonstrated knowledge and understanding that is founded upon a basis or opportunity for originality in developing and/or applying ideas, often within a research context. – Can apply their acquired knowledge and understanding, and problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study. – Have the ability to integrate knowledge and handle complexity, and formulate judgments with incomplete or limited information, but that include reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments. – Can communicate their conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these, to specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously. – Have the learning skills to allow them to continue to study in a manner that may be largely self-directed or autonomous.

Applicants must have an English B1 level or higher, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students interested in the specialisation in Japanese Language, Literature and Culture must have a Japanese A2 level or similar. Students interested in the specialisation in Chinese Language, Literature and Culture must have a Chinese B1 level or similar.
