Main focus

; The graduate will be able to: – Identify theories, paradigms, strategic thinking and thinkers, concepts and principles of Security Studies. – Apply and describe theoretical models of strategic thinking throughout history to interpret global security. – Identify the object, method and approaches of Security Studies. – Identify the objectives of a research project, propose hypotheses and evaluate methods and techniques for the analysis of Security Studies. – Manage documentary sources, sources in think tanks, statistics in the field of security studies and databases and indicators related to armed conflicts. – Recognise, formulate and debate the concepts and dimensions of security. – Compare and evaluate the main contemporary and emerging threats, as well as the actors and institutions involved in security and defence policies. – Recognise the key aspects, concepts and theories for the analysis of armed conflicts. – Identify and analyse armed conflicts by carrying out a comparative study. – Identify and evaluate instruments for the prevention and resolution of conflicts. – Evaluate the role of the armed forces in the context of national and international military operations. – Identify the key aspects, theories, concepts and methodology for understanding the strategic framework of conflicts. – Identify and compare case studies and regional areas of the main conflicts and zones of tension at a global level. – Design and carry out scientific research, applying the research methods studied in such a way as to demonstrate the knowledge acquired on Strategic Thinking and Global Security.

Competences

Students that have completed the second cycle have the following competencies: – Have demonstrated knowledge and understanding that is founded upon a basis or opportunity for originality in developing and/or applying ideas, often within a research context. – Can apply their acquired knowledge and understanding, and problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study. – Have the ability to integrate knowledge and handle complexity, and formulate judgments with incomplete or limited information, but that include reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments. – Can communicate their conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these, to specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously. – Have the learning skills to allow them to continue to study in a manner that may be largely self-directed or autonomous.
