  • Statistics (0542)

Main focus

This degree programme will qualify graduates to apply methods and models of Statistics and O.R. to analyse data, and to make decisions under uncertainty. Its main objectives are the following:
– To enable students to answer complex real problems and build scenarios and models. They will thus be able to use scientific methods and apply statistical analysis techniques to derive conclusions and make decisions.
– To enable students to analyse data from the moment that the problem is identified and formulated. They will be thus able to make decisions pertaining to the design, data collection and coding, analysis, model fitting and validation, interpretation, publication and presentation of results, and finally, the formulation of conclusions and proposals for future work.
– To provide training in techniques, methods, and models, as well as applications to real problems. The skills acquired will allow students to understand the variability of the data, the need for design, differences between observational and experimental studies, the randomisation or influence of covariates, the need for balance between model fitting and complexity, etc.
– To foment self-learning abilities in students.
– To enable students to understand problems in different fields so that they can elaborate models appropriate to the context.

Competences

1. Understand and possess basic knowledge of the modules in the degree programme.
2. Apply this basic knowledge in professional work and possess the demonstrated skills by developing and defending arguments and solving problems within the field of Statistics.
3. Collect and interpret data in order to make judgments, which include a reflection on relevant social, scientific, or ethical issues.
4. Communicate information, ideas, problems, and solutions to specialised and non-specialised audiences.
5. Develop learner autonomy that will facilitate subsequent studies.
6. Use bibliography search and management tools.
7. Communicate in another language of scientific relevance.
8. Possess entrepreneurial skills and aptitudes.
9. Promote and guarantee respect for human rights, principles of universal accessibility, equality, democratic values, and peace.
