It is recognised as a professional qualification in Directive 2005/36/EC (7 September 2005) of the European Parliament and the Council, on the recognition of professional qualifications. The overall objective of the Bachelor’s Degree in Speech and Language Therapy in the White Paper of Speech Therapy, subsequently published in Order CIN/726/2009, (18 March 2009) (BOE No. 73, 26 March 2009) is to train professionals with the scientific knowledge for the following: (a) understand language disorders and alterations in their interdisciplinary, biological, psychological, and linguistic dimensions; (b) accurately evaluate these disorders; (c) therapeutically intervene in individual and social contexts throughout life; (d) work in schools, welfare, healthcare, and social centres, as well as on disciplinary and multidisciplinary teams, with a view to promoting and improving language and communication, and thus the health, quality of life, and well-being of people who need their services. Speech and language therapy professionals carry out prevention activities, evaluation of and recuperation from hearing, speech, and language disorders by applying the therapeutic techniques of the discipline.

Competences

3. Work in the school, welfare, health, and social environments as well on disciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.
4. Recognise and integrate the biological foundations (anatomy and physiology), psychological foundations (evolutionary development processes), and the linguistic and pedagogical foundations of speech therapy intervention in communication, language, speech, hearing, voice and oral and nonverbal functions.
5. Understand and use the evaluation and diagnostic procedures, techniques and tools for interventions and predict the evolution of disorders pertaining to communication, language, speech, hearing, voice, and non-verbal oral functions from a multidisciplinary perspective.
